Dragonfly in Amber - Diana Gabaldon

Dragonfly in Amber

This book is the 2nd in the series about Claire Fraser who is a time traveller who fell through some magical stones into Scotland in the 18th Century. This book starts off in Scotland in the 1960’s where Clare and her daughter Brianna have returned to Scotland for Claire to find out about Jamie and if he survived Culloden. The book is mainly about Claire and Jamie’s travels in France and Scotland fighting for Charles Edward Stuart.

Again Diana has managed to keep the reader interested in Claire’s adventures and her description of the French court and Scotland in th 18th Century is brilliant.

I would highly recommend this book. It is an enjoyable read and keeps you hanging on at the end of every chapter. I have just received the next installment which is called “Voyager” and can’t wait to start it.

Ugly - Constance Briscoe

Ugly - Constance Briscoe

This book was recommended to me by Kman’s sister who brought the book for a couple of friends as presents. This book is an account of Constance’s (Clare) life as child growing up in London. Constance was physically and mentally abused by her mother from a very early age and continued until Constance left to go to University aged 21.

It is hard to believe that a mother would be so cruel to one of her children and cause such horrendous injuries. This book finishes when Constance starts university but I have just looked on Play.com and the second book “Beyond Ugly” is being released early next year.

I found this book very moving and very hard to put down. I finished it in a couple of days.

The Widow of the South - Robert Hicks

The Widow of the South - Robert Hicks
This book was bought for me by the Kman for Christmas and I have just got round to reading this. I found this book quite hard going and didn’t realise until the end that it was based in a true story.

The story is written around the event of the American Civil War and around two main characters; Carrie McGavock and Zachariah Caswell. Carrie lives in big house in a town called Franklin, which is taken over by the Confederate Army as a hospital, she has to deal with the horrors of the war as the injured soldiers are brought to her house for medical attention. Zachariah Caswell is an injured solider who wants to die but is saved by Carrie.

Again I don’t want to give too much away in this review but I did enjoy the book as it showed the courage of Carrie and how she dealt with the Civil War and how she is remembered to this day for work she did for those soldiers slain in the war.

I will give this book 6/10

The Tenth Circle - Jodi Picoult

This is the newly released book from Jodi Picoult. Another really good read with a fantastic twist at the end. Most of Jodi Picoult’s books I have read have not been happy tales and often surround subjects that I think most people would avoid.

When I read Jodi’s books I have finished them within a few days, as she always finishes her chapters with a slight cliff hanger which means you are impelled to carry on to the next chapter. There has been many a night when I am still reading into the early hours.

I won’t mention what the book was about but highly recommend that you read this any Jodi’s other titles; my favourite was “Keeping Faith”.

Score: 9/10

Cross Stitch - Diane Gabaldon

cross-stitch.jpg

This is the first book in Diane’s series about a time-traveller called Claire. Having read the 7th book in the series first and not really understanding some of the story, it all became clear when reading “Cross Stitch”. This book was very interesting and gave a good insight into Scotland in the early 18th Century. I have just brought the second book in the series which is called “Dragonfly in Amber”.

Score: 9/10

Good Read - Diana Gabaldon

snow-and-ashes.jpg

As the Kman has already mentioned in the first entry on the website the posts that are likely to appear from me on this site will probably be around the topics of books, music of various genres and other “exciting” things.

So here goes with my first book/author recommendation:

Author: Diane Gabaldon

Title: A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Kman brought me this book for Christmas ( I chose it). I was about 2 chapters into the book when I realised that this book was the 7th in a series about a time traveller called Claire, who returns to the past to be with her husband called Jamie Fraser. It is a throughly good read and very difficult to put down. I would recommend that you read the first in the series called “Cross Stitch” which sets the scene for the rest. I have nearly finished the book so will let you know how the first one goes in the next couple of weeks.

Score 9/10

Enjoy :)
